What makes a great gift

I was looking on Facebook recently and there was some debate as to what makes a great gift, be it a birthday gift, a Christmas gift or a little unplanned gift. Reading through the comments, I found that either I disagreed with most of the posters, or they were lying!

Almost all of my friends were saying that they would much prefer a home-made gift or something cheap and thoughtful. Some of them posted examples of gifts that they had received from boyfriends or husbands, and I felt really bad because because I couldn’t help but think how rubbish they were. I know that sounds really bad, but I just don’t see how a glass with some cheesy personalised message compares to a new set of Gucci sunglasses or a Louis Vutton bag! I know that sounds really shallow, but I can’t help but think that secretly my friends all agree with me but they are afraid of how they sound if they they say it!

The truth is, good quality things cost money. I would much rather a luxury or premium gift off a website like The Gift Council than some cardboard handcrafts from Etsy. Now I know sometimes a cute picture in a nice frame is a great stocking filler – something to accompany the main present, but there should always be a main present, and I think a good price guide for a main gift is one day pay for a ‘regular’ occasion and two days for a special.

I know there are people who genuinely appreciate hand crafts and quirky gifts and I can’t speak for everyone, but I’d bet my bottom dollar that if you’re buying a gift for a girl who wears branded clothes and likes branded shoes and handbags – that they’ll appreciate a branded, luxury item way more than a homemade heart made out of paper mache.
